Illuminated Channel Letters

Illuminated channel letters are three-dimensional, internally lit signs built from individual letters and logos. Each letter has its own face, sidewalls, and back, and is lit from the inside so your name stays readable after dark. This collection covers the builds we make for storefronts, building fascias, lobbies, and interior feature walls.

What Makes Up an Illuminated Channel Letter

  • Face: the front panel, usually acrylic or polycarbonate, cut or formed to the letter shape. Faces can be colored, translucent, or opaque.
  • Returns (sidewalls): the metal sides of the letter, commonly aluminum, painted or finished to match your brand.
  • Back: the rear panel that closes the letter. In halo-lit builds it lets light spill onto the wall behind the letter.
  • Lighting: low-voltage LED modules or strips mounted inside each letter.
  • Trim cap: the edging that joins the face to the return for a clean finished edge.

Channel Letter Styles in This Collection

Face-Lit (Front-Lit) Channel Letters

Light passes through the acrylic face so the letter itself glows, while the returns stay dark. The contrast makes the letters read strongly from a distance, which is why face-lit letters are the standard choice for retail storefronts and plaza signage.

Halo-Lit (Backlit or Reverse-Lit) Channel Letters

Opaque faces and solid returns push the light out the back, creating a soft halo on the wall behind each letter. The glow outlines the shape instead of filling it, a look that suits upscale and professional storefronts.

Open-Face Channel Letters

No face panel. The exposed neon or LED sits inside the open can, so the light source stays visible and the letter reads bright and bold.

Front and Back Lit (Combination) Channel Letters

A lit face plus backlighting. The letter glows and casts a halo at the same time, useful when you want maximum visibility on a busy street.

Mounting Options

  • Direct mount: each letter is fixed to the wall on its own with a small spacer or pad.
  • Raceway (wireway) mount: the letters sit on a metal box that houses the wiring and power supply, which keeps the wall cleaner and makes installation easier.
  • Remote power: the power supply is installed away from the sign, useful when mounting space is tight.

Where Illuminated Channel Letters Work Best

  • Retail storefronts and shopping centers
  • Restaurants, cafes, and bars
  • Office building exteriors and reception walls
  • Hotels, gyms, and medical practices
  • Interior feature walls and trade show booths

How to Choose the Right Build

  1. Start with the message. A short name or acronym reads better than a full sentence at street distance.
  2. Match the style to the setting. Face-lit for maximum punch, halo-lit for a softer premium look, open-face for a retro or industrial feel.
  3. Check the wall. Brick, stucco, EIFS, metal panel, and glass each need different anchors and a different lighting layout.
  4. Plan for power. Confirm where the electrical feed will come from and whether a raceway is needed.
  5. Confirm the colors. Face color, return color, and LED color all affect how the sign looks by day and by night.
  6. Review the proof. Approve size, layout, and colors before fabrication begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are illuminated channel letters?

They are 3D signs made of individual letters, each with a face, returns, and a back, lit from inside by LED modules. The letters mount to a wall, a fascia, or a raceway.

What is the difference between face-lit and halo-lit channel letters?

Face-lit letters glow through the front face. Halo-lit letters use an opaque face and push light out the back, which outlines each letter with a glow on the wall.

Can channel letters be used indoors and outdoors?

Yes. The same construction works for exterior storefronts and for interior walls, with finish and mounting details chosen for the location.

Can I order custom sizes and colors?

Yes. Letters are built to your dimensions, with face color, return finish, and LED color selected to match your brand.

Do the letters need a raceway?

Not always. Letters can be mounted directly to the wall, or grouped on a raceway that hides the wiring and power supply. The right choice depends on the wall surface and where power is available.
