Wayfinding Signs

Wayfinding signs that make a building easy to navigate

People should not have to ask for directions inside a building. A good wayfinding system tells visitors where they are, what is on each floor and how to get to the room, department or exit they need. HelloNeonSign produces wayfinding signs for offices, hotels, hospitals, schools, shopping centers, parking garages and mixed-use buildings.

A wayfinding project is usually more than one sign. It is a family of signs with a consistent look: a directory at the entrance, directional signs at decision points, floor and room signs in the corridors, and safety signs where required. We can quote a single sign or a full system from your floor plans.

Wayfinding signage system

A wayfinding system starts with the floor plan and the path a visitor takes from the entrance to the destination. The main components are:

  • Directory signs at the entrance or elevator lobby.
  • Directional signs at corridors, stairs and lifts.
  • Floor and room signs at the destination.
  • Safety signs for exits, evacuation routes and restricted areas.

The sign family should share the same typography, color, material and mounting height. This makes the building feel consistent and helps visitors read the signs faster.

Directional signs and directory signs

Directional signs point to departments, rooms, facilities or exits. They can be wall-mounted, suspended from the ceiling or mounted on a post outdoors. Directory signs list the tenants or departments and are often placed at the main entrance, elevator lobby or building reception. For multi-tenant buildings, the directory may be combined with the building name sign or a monument sign at the entrance.

Send the tenant list or department list, floor plan and the desired sign size. For a large building, a phased quote by floor or zone is usually the most practical.

Blade signs, projecting signs and ceiling suspended signs

  • Blade signs project from the wall so they are visible down a corridor.
  • Projecting signs serve a similar purpose outdoors or in high-ceiling spaces.
  • Ceiling suspended signs hang above a walkway or at a junction.
  • Directory kiosks stand on the floor in a lobby or atrium.

These formats are useful when the sign needs to be seen from a distance or from more than one direction. The mounting structure must match the wall, ceiling or floor condition; send photos of the installation points.

Parking garage and parking lot directional signs

Parking wayfinding includes entrance signs, level signs, aisle directionals, pedestrian route signs and exit signs. For parking garages, the signs must be readable at driving speed and visible in low light. Reflective materials or illuminated signs may be required. Send the garage layout, level naming and traffic flow for a quote.

Planning a wayfinding project

To quote a wayfinding system, send:

  • Floor plans with the destinations marked.
  • The tenant or department list.
  • Photos of the entrance, corridors, lift lobby and typical wall.
  • The building's sign standard or brand guideline, if one exists.
  • The required sign types and approximate quantities.

We will propose a sign family, sizes and a quote. For large projects, we can phase production by floor or building.
