Before you start

Check the sign, template and hardware. Confirm the house number and street name are correct. Turn off power at the breaker if you are connecting a hardwired sign. If you are not comfortable with electrical work, hire a licensed electrician.

Tools

  • Drill and bits for the wall material
  • Level and tape measure
  • Pencil and mounting template
  • Screwdriver or nut driver
  • Masonry anchors for brick or stone
  • Exterior-grade sealant
  • Wire strippers and weatherproof connectors for illuminated signs

Mounting height

Wall signs: 48-60 inches above grade, or at eye level beside the door. Yard signs: 24-48 inches above grade. Make sure the number is visible from the street and the sidewalk.

Backlit and front lit signs

  1. Mark the mounting holes with the template.
  2. Drill the holes and insert anchors.
  3. Pull the low-voltage cable through the wall or conduit.
  4. Connect the sign to the 12V DC driver using weatherproof connectors.
  5. Mount the sign, check the level and seal the penetrations.
  6. Restore power and test the light.

Solar signs

  1. Assemble the post or bracket.
  2. Set the stake 8-12 inches into firm soil, or mount the bracket on the wall.
  3. Face the panel toward the sun and check for shade.
  4. Attach the number panel and check the height.
  5. Let the battery charge for a full day before testing.

Metal and non-lit signs

  1. Mark the holes with the template.
  2. Drill and anchor.
  3. Mount the numbers and check the spacing.
  4. Seal the holes with exterior sealant.

Brick, siding and stucco

Use a masonry bit and anchors for brick. For siding, use the appropriate fasteners and seal the penetration. For stucco, use a masonry anchor that reaches the substrate. Do not overtighten; it can crack the surface.

Troubleshooting

  • Light does not turn on: check the power supply, connection and sensor.
  • Solar sign runs out of power: clean the panel, check for shade and test the battery.
  • Number is loose: tighten the hardware and replace damaged anchors.
  • Water in the sign: check the seals and cable entry; dry the sign before resealing.
